Arsenic, cadmium and lead concentrations in Yerba mate commercialized in Southern Brazil by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry Ciência Rural
Santos,Lisia Maria Gobbo dos; Vicentini Neto,Santos Alves; Iozzi,Giovanna; Jacob,Silvana do Couto.
ABSTRACT: “Mate” or “Yerba Mate” (Ilex paraguariensis) is a native South American plant, commonly consumed in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and southern Brazil. Recent research has detected the presence of many vitamins and metals in this plant. Theses metals are also part of yerba mate’s mineral composition, due to soil and water contamination by pesticides and fertilizers, coal and oil combustion, vehicle emissions, mining, smelting, refining and the incineration of urban and industrial waste. Regardless of their origin, some inorganic elements, such as arsenic, cadmium and lead, are considered toxic, since they accumulate in all plant tissues and are, thus, introduced into the food chain. In this context, the aim of the present study was to determine and...

Composition and Bioactive Properties of Yerba Mate (llex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.): A Review Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Burris,Kellie P; Harte,Federico M; Michael Davidson,P; Neal Stewart Jr,C; Zivanovic,Svetlana.
Yerba Mate is a popular tea beverage produced and consumed in the South American countries of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay, and is processed from the leaves and stems of Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil., a perennial shrub from the Aquifoliaceae family. Production occurs in six stages: harvesting older leaves and small stems, roasting by direct fire, drying under hot air, milling to specified size, aging to acquire optimal sensory attributes, and final packaging. While grown and consumed for centuries in South America, its popularity is increasing in the United States because of demand by consumers for healthier, more natural foods, its filling a niche for a different type of tea beverage, and for Yerba Mate's potential health benefits -...

Evaluación del germoplasma de Ilex paraguariensis e Ilex dumosa (Aquifoliaceae) Boletín de la Sociedad
Gottlieb,Alexandra Marina; Giberti,Gustavo Carlos; Poggio,Lidia.

Genetic parameters estimates and visual selection for leaves production in Ilex paraguariensis Bragantia
Sturion,José Alfredo; Stuepp,Carlos André; Wendling,Ivar.
ABSTRACT The selection of yerba mate superior genotypes, based on each plant leaf weight, is based on genetic parameters obtained from experimental plantations and it is practically impossible from the fourth year of age. Therefore, we estimate genetic parameters and check the feasibility of selection through notes and weight estimates of each tree at 18.5 years of age. The genetic material consists of a combined trial of provenances and progenies of half-sibs with 140 progenies from 7 provenances, installed in Ivaí, Paraná, Brazil, in a randomized block design with 10 repetitions. The genetic control of leaf production is of low magnitude (ĥ2a= 0.175042 ± 0.0393) revealing high influence of the environment. The additive genetic correlations between the...

Ilex paraguariensis extracts extend the lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster fed a high-fat diet BJMBR
Colpo,A.C.; Lima,M.E.; da Rosa,H.S.; Leal,A.P.; Colares,C.C.; Zago,A.C.; Salgueiro,A.C.F.; Bertelli,P.R.; Minetto,L.; Moura,S.; Mendez,A.S.L.; Folmer,V..
Studies have suggested that total energy intake and diet composition affect lifespan and ageing. A high-fat diet induces oxidative stress and affects the development of diseases. In contrast, antioxidants are capable of reducing its harmful effects. Yerba mate beverages are an important source of antioxidants, but there is scarce knowledge about their effects on suppressing fat accumulation. Here, we investigated the compounds present in yerba mate extracts and assessed their effects on Drosophila melanogaster given a high cholesterol diet. LS-ESI-MS analysis showed the presence of matesaponins, phenolic compounds and methylxanthines in all of the examined extracts. In Drosophila, under extract treatment conditions, the mean lifespan was significantly...

Morphophysiological responses of Ilex paraguariensis seedlings to different substrates and fertilizations AGRIAMBI
Zavistanovicz,Thairini C.; Araujo,Maristela M.; Aimi,Suelen C.; Flores,Rejane; Berghetti,Álvaro L. P.; Deponti,Gilmar.
ABSTRACT The increasing demand for Ilex paraguariensis St. Hill (yerba mate) by-products generated the need for producing a greater quantity of seedlings and improve their quality. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of different substrates combined with base fertilization for Ilex paraguariensis seedlings, through morphophysiological parameters. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, in a 5 x 3 factorial arrangement, and the treatments consisted of five substrate formulations combined with two fertilizers, and a control without fertilization, in November 2013. The I. paraguariensis seedlings produced in the substrate consisted of subsurface soil, cattle manure and charred rice hulls (2:2:1) presented...

Optimal culture conditions for the initial development of Ilex paraguariensis A.St.-Hil. explants Acta Botanica
Griebeler,Ana Gláucia; Consatti,Guilherme; Freitas,Elisete Maria de; Sperotto,Raul Antonio.
In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.) is an economically and culturally important species. Because of the difficulty in obtaining plantlets from seeds, micropropagation has emerged as an alternative that could increase production. This work aimed to evaluate the effect that treatment with 6-benzyladenine (BA), at concentrations of 2.2, 8.9, and 20 µM and associated with naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA, 0.5 µM), has on the in vitro growth and leaf emission of I. paraguariensis nodal segments cultivated in 0.5 X Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium or 0.5 X Woody Plant Medium (WPM). The most efficient treatment was MS medium with 8.9 µM BA+NAA, in which I. paraguariensis presented greater shoot elongation and higher...

da Veiga,D.T.A.; Bringhenti,R.; Copes,R.; Tatsch,E.; Moresco,R.N.; Comim,F.V.; Premaor,M.O..
The prevalence of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases is increased in postmenopausal women, which contributes to the burden of illnesses in this period of life. Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a native bush from Southern South America. Its leaves are rich in phenolic components, which may have antioxidant, vasodilating, hypocholesterolemic, and hypoglycemic proprieties. This post hoc analysis of the case-control study nested in the Obesity and Bone Fracture Cohort evaluated the consumption of yerba mate and the prevalence of hypertension, dyslipidemia, and coronary diseases in postmenopausal women. Ninety-five postmenopausal women were included in this analysis. A questionnaire was applied to evaluate the risk factors and diagnosis of cardiovascular...
